For those of you readers down here in the south, we are lucky to have an abundant and cost effective counter top material available - granite. So here is a week of blogs dedicated to this amazing material. But what makes granite such a great choice? Well, let me tell you....

1. Natural Beauty - Nothing can compete with the beauty of a natural stone. The different colorings, striations, movements and textures make each piece of this material a one of a kind.

2. Durability - You've probably heard, "don't use your knives directly on the granite surface." Well, that's not because you are going to damage your granite, it's because you are going to dull your knives very quickly. Granite is the second most dense material in the world (behind diamonds) and can withstand blades, intense heat and all sorts of chemicals making it a breeze to maintain and clean.

3. Durability Part 2 - Once you've installed granite countertops, there's not a whole lot of damage you can do to them. So, in accordance with my green philosophy, you're not going to be replacing them every few years due to damage or failure.

In this kitchen- the perimeter counter tops are a black granite with a leather finish while the islands are a beautiful marble.
4. Mixing and Matching - Granite can be easily mixed and matched with other granites, stones or countertop materials (like butcher block). One granite can be used on your perimeter counter tops while a completely different one is highlighted on your island. Really spectacular granites or stones are great to use in small areas like powder bathrooms, butler's pantries or on pieces of furniture.
