I have a strict rule when it comes to gift-giving - the recipient must be able to eat it, drink it or bathe in it. I love to give gifts of wine, luxury soaps or washes, even the occasional game slips into someone's gift bag. Not only do I play by this rule, I try to only ask for the same kind of gifts because I just don't have room in my home for one more accessory.
But if you’re the type that just can’t resist souvenir shopping, here are some things to consider when buying souvenirs…
Scale- Bigger is generally better. It is easier and more appealing to decorate with fewer large-scale items than with lots of tiny ones. Larger items are easier to see and can be enjoyed from several vantage points.
Groups of like things- A grouping of seashells on stands or several antique tiles arranged together look like a beautiful collection. Think in quantities of 3, 5, 7, 9 - odd numbers of things are best because they feel more complete and interesting than ‘one’ object from Costa Rica.
Good things to pick up-
Picture frames - 5x7, and 8x10’s are a good, useable sizes
Candle - Unusual candles can be hard to find, especially larger ones 10’’ or taller
Glass objects - Although difficult to transport, glass vases or sculptures are wonderful to add to your accessories, 12’’ or taller are sure to sparkle and be enjoyed.
Artwork - Pack a document tube in your suitcase; rolled canvasses can be stretched onto a frame once brought back home.
Fabric- Finding a beautiful piece of fabric (or scarf or shawl) is a fun way to capture a memory. If you sew or know someone who does, throw pillows, window treatments, and shower curtains all can be made from textiles picked up on holiday.
Forget the resorts gift shop- A fun thing to do is to hit garage sales and thrift shops when on vacation. I have picked up some totally cool things this way including art, dishes, vintage lamps. You can find some really unique and inexpensive items this way and definitely have met some real characters along the way!
