Last month, I attended an open casting call for HGTV's hit show, Design Star and was asked back for a second audition. That audition would consist of a screen testing, questions, questions and more questions, a 'design aptitude test' and a demonstration. I had 5 minutes to demonstrate something 'design-y.' Now if you think about my job, most things take much longer than 5 minutes and most things are too large to fit into my car. And I wasn't about to go in the direction of the producers' example, which was "how to cut and sand wood."
I began my introduction by saying, "as a designer, you have to know lots of stuff. I can make new things look old and old things look new but I always follow my two rules for design. 1 - Form must always follow function; if a space doesn't perform, no matter how beautiful it may be, its a failure. Much like marrying a beautiful woman with no sense of humor - great to look at, not much fun to be around. And 2 - design must support all of the inhabitants of a home including our furry four-legged friends.....With the help of a borrowed vintage suitcase, some leftover fabrics, unusual finials and funky trim, here is to designing for everyone....."

I haven't heard any news from HGTV yet, but I will definitely keep everyone posted! Thank you to everyone for the tremendous support!
