Good design is long lasting and classic. But we don't always have the financial capabilities to completely redesign our space. Designers are always working on a budget and this forces us to be creative with materials and selections.
So here are my best ideas when on a budget...
1. Strong wall color- let your paint be a statement. Rich brown, Navy, Terra Cotta- Turquoise are all strong color choices. A strong color can be used on an accent wall or add a 1.5'' stripe just under the crown or just above the base boards and over the door jams. Basically, pinstripping the room. A very cool look for a litte money.
2. In baths- use a tile that has a rectified edge (straight edge) The size is important- a 12x12 can be cut in 1/2 for an interesting over sized subway (6x12) larger is even more interesting- 16x16 or 18x18 cut in half-is pretty fun. Consider how the tile is layed on the floor- try to avoid laying in a 'grid' instead- off-set in 1/2 or in 3rds. All projects have budgets that force designers to be creative with materials. The best way is to get a classic look is to select a great 'field tile' and make it work for you. Adding an intresting glass tile or mosaic to a focal wall that doesn't overtake the entire room is a great looking update that just takes a little more planning.
3. Don't forget to frame our your mirrors also- can be tile or wood - that really finishes a bath.
4. Another useful idea is to mix a matte (non-shinny) tile with a polished tile finish- this adds character, and can really create a nice contrast without adding a 'color' to the space (honed marble and polished marble- honed travitine and polished trav). But don't ever used polished on a bathroom floor where wet feet will be- I've personally wiped out on a marble floor- and it's no fun! Stick to honed or textured finishes were wet feet might be.
5. Lastly- use a darker grout vs a lighter grout- unless the 'grout' is part of the over arching design- you're better off letting it fade and allowing the tile to be the star of the room.
As I always say, live boldly!
