Cool Kitchen Ideas - Part 2

Functional Cabinetry

I am all about maximizing space and storage and there are so many unique things to do with your cabinetry to maximize both of those things.  No more dead space- only ideal pantry, pot and pan and dish storage.

1.  Pilaster Drawer Fronts - These hidden drawers are perfect for storing all of your spices and small pantry items.  The best part...they look fabulous when pushed in, like a piece of furniture in your kitchen.

2.  Cookie Sheet Space - We all hate digging through our pots and pans for our cookie sheets which always end up on the bottom.  Divided storage whether in some under cabinet space or even over your fridge helps keep things organize and danger-zone free.

3.  Trash and Recycling drawers - No one likes seeing a garbage can! Hide them in a large drawer near your sink.  You can even have a drawer for recycling.

4.  Chalkboard Door Fronts - So maybe not all over your entire kitchen - but your pantry door is a great place for a family reminder area.  Chalkboard and magnetic paint can be used for memo areas for your grocery lists or upcoming events.

5.  Laptop Drawer/Plug In Station - With our technologically based society- we need a spot to plug in.  Having a drawer to hid your unsightly cords or your laptop when it's family time is the perfect update for a modern family.

. Then continue on. You need the space, so get that Give Away and Throw Away stuff out of your room, idlemiatemy. For the Put Away items, just stack the boxes in a corner until you sort through everything that is under your bed and in your desk. Get rid of everything you have not used in the past six months or will not use in the next six months. If there is stuff that you do not use and just cannot part with, then box it up and store it out of your room in the attic, basement or garage. You need the space for your stuff, not to store things you have not or will not be using regularly. Then, move onto your wardrobe and be honest when going through your clothing ..will you really wear that orange shirt with the green design that is too big? These pants would fit if I lost or gained 5 lbs. NO, get rid of it in the Give Away box!!! If something needs mending, put it in a separate bag so it does not take up valuable space in your day to day clothing. Be diligent and only work on a section at a time for maybe two hours a day.Soon, all of the stuff piled in your Put Away boxes will be ready to sort. Now you have a bunch of stuff to Put Away. Take all of your clothes and fold them neatly on your bed in piles of pants, shirts, etc. This way you will see what you have and the amount of space you need to store them. Next, do the same with all of the desk items. All of your hair things and jewelry, etc. Before you know it, you will have lots of space for all of your stuff and you won't be spending time looking for things because you will be organized.Use your closet space wisely. Have double rods, one under the other, if you need more hanging space. If you have floor space in the closet, store your socks in a basket near your shoes. Yes, your room will be a disaster in this process, but think of the end result. An organized and clean room where everything you need and want will be at your fingertips. Ahhh.

One great thing to use is one or two of those under-the-bed storage cases. They're long and about 1.5 feet acsors but not very tall so they can fit under you're bed great for storing junk! Also, shelves and bookcases work wonders for knick-knacks.If you have a dresser keep the clothes folded as nicely as possible b/c it expands the space and you can find things better. Coat racks or on the wall hangers work great for storing things. I'd also go through all your stuff sometime this summer and make 3 piles while you're doing it. 1-stuff to keep where you can get it. 2-stuff to put away (like in the attic or store in boxes under your bed or something) 3-stuff to give away or throw away. Try to not be a packrat either because that REALLY cuts down on space. Just keep the things you really use and want and need. Hope I helped! = )
