AIA Sandcastle Competition, A Wild West Showdown

On Saturday June 5, the American Society of Architects hosted the annual AIA Sandcastle Competition of Galveston, TX.  The sun was out, the water was refreshing and the GHBA (Greater Houston Builders Association) was ready to build!  There were over 100 groups vying for the best sandcastle.   Each group was required to have some sort of affiliation with an AIA member, create a theme and build a castle out of 3 tons of sand representing that theme.

By Design Interiors is a member of the GHBA and they have participated in this event for years.  This year, to coincide with the big 'green' movement, our theme was "Saving Texas Energy." Our castle was to be a cowboy conserving his energy by taking a nap.

The competition began at 10am and we had until 3pm to create our sandcastle and try to collect as many signatures as possible from beach-goers.  The number of signatures we received counted towards our overall score.  The castles were created from building forms and filling them with as much sand as possible.

Then the forms are removed and sand carvers work their magic.

But the theme went well beyond our castle.  Our tent was fully decorated to like like a wild west saloon and our workers were transformed into cowboys as well.

The mustaches really helped us gather signatures!  Or maybe we just really enjoyed wearing them!

While we didn't win any of the prizes-- not even 'most hilarious', we sure did attract some attention!  Salsa TV interviewed myself and my two assistants Erika (although you may not recognize her) and Amber about the event and our theme.

Our sandcastle was also the first picture on khou's photo gallery from the event!  If you missed the event this year....You should definitely mark it on your calender for next summer! It is incredibly fun and full of creativity!
