When you say the words "30 years" it seems like such a long time. Three decades, 7-1/2 presidential terms, 10,950 days. But recently, I celebrated my 30th high school reunion and when I think back, 30 years doesn't seem like it was that long ago. Although several aspects have changed about myself in those past 30 years, lots of things have stayed the same. I still like similar things, I am still passionate about the same things, and the same things still bother and annoy me!
I have made it a goal of mine, a basis for all of my designs to make them last. I want to create spaces that will be just as great in 30 years or more as they are now. I'm not just talking about aesthetically pleasing spaces but functional ones as well. Although the structure and activities of the family is constantly changing, a good design will easily adapt and be accommodating with minimal effort.
This goal of mine is not only what I consider 'good design' but also a way to lessen our impact on the environment. If a space requires only minimal updates and repairs through its lifetime, the environmental impact is drastically reduced.
30 years might seem like a long time, but we can save a lot of resources by looking 30 years ahead.
